Summers in Hull
As kids, during our summers in Hull, we used to go to Fort Revere and explore. We learned a bit of its long and interesting history, which dates back to the American Revolution. It was easy to tap into our imaginations and conjure up stories.
Painting on Site at Fort Revere
My newest intention was going up there to paint. Restored as an historic site called Fort Revere Park, the fort sits atop Telegraph Hill with great panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Hull, Boston, and the Harbor Islands. Lots of subject matter to consider!
I began this painting last September on a hot, hot day. While I scoped out the scene, two main vantage points emerged. Allerton Point was intriguing, yet complicated. Leaning toward simplicity, I chose to paint Boston and the Harbor Islands.
View from Fort Revere – Work in Progress
The first thing I did was block in the largest areas. Working on black Canson paper allowed me to focus on the contrasts. I quickly sketched in the ocean and foreground vegetation. Then I added the sky. I accomplished a lot during this first session.

View from Fort Revere – Finishing Up
A few weeks ago, our plein air group returned to this location. Braving the cold and the wind, I was able to finish the painting! After having given this piece some time to rest and percolate, I looked at the scene and the art with fresh eyes and energy.
