The Thoreau Society

Influence and Inspiration
Henry David Thoreau has had a great influence on me. I first read his “Civil Disobedience” essay in high school, which inspired me to take part in various anti-war (Vietnam) and anti-nuclear actions. I can’t remember exactly when I read his iconic book, Walden, because it feels like a book I’ve been familiar with since I was a child. Thoreau was the first environmentalist I could relate to on an emotional, spiritual level.

It is my great fortune that I live near Walden Pond, which is in Concord, Massachusetts. Within a half hour drive from my home, I can experience the place Thoreau retreated to for 2 years. It’s surely not the same as it was when Thoreau lived there, especially with the large numbers of people clammering for space on its small beach, but you can still find areas that resemble some of the stillness and quiet Thoreau must have breathed in.

Synchronicity
Last year, at the Boston Green Fest, I happened to meet Mike Frederick, the Executive Director of the Thoreau Society. He had set up a booth at the festival and we struck up a conversation about some of the delightful books he had on display for sale. I mentioned that I am an artist and graphic designer, and Mike said that they were looking for some new designs for items to sell at The Shop at Walden Pond. From this synchronistic meeting emerged a T-shirt design project for The Thoreau Society.

Youth T-Shirts
Two of my designs are currently available at The Shop at Walden Pond as youth T-shirts (http://www.shopatwaldenpond.org/Clothing_s/74.htm). The child and chipmunk is printed on a Melon color Tee, with this Thoreau quote:

“Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for an instant?”

The drums, printed on a Kiwi color Tee, has this Thoreau’s quote:

“If a man does not keep peace with his companions,
perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.
Let him step to the music which he hears,
however measured or far away.”

Adult T-shirts
The same 2 designs are now available for purchase as Adult T-shirts, directly from me. The child and chipmunk is printed on a Sky Blue Tee, while the drums are on a Kiwi Tee, just like the youth version. Available sizes are small, medium, and large (preshrunk).

Regular price = $22 each
